Boxes: How Many You Really Need for a Move?

For those who are moving, boxes are an essential packing material to have. There are many people who put their belongings in a trash bag, such as clothes, which can work. But, not everything is going to go into these trash bags and still be protected in a move. Plus, professional movers are going to feel more comfortable in moving boxes. So how many boxes do you need?

There are those who always get too many boxes, then they have numerous boxes that they have not used, simply sitting around. While we agree, it is better to have too many than not enough, there are a few methods for better calculating how many boxes you are going to need.

One of the first things to do is to categorize your belongings so that you can get a better estimate of how many boxes will be needed. For example, you know that you will need a box for each of the following:

  • Dishes
  • Pots
  • Pans
  • Other cookware

If you go through each room and do this, you can get a fairly accurate estimate for the number of boxes that you are going to need.

If you do not feel like going through and categorizing your rooms just yet, you can use these estimates to help you get started:

  • For 2 to 3 rooms: 10 small, 10 medium and 3 large boxes
  • For 3 to 5 rooms: 15 small, 20 medium and 8 to 10 large boxes
  • For 5 or more rooms: 25 small, 25 medium and 15 to 20 large boxes

This is not always the case, as there are many people who have more items in a smaller home, while those with a larger home may not have as many. However, if you were to call a storage unit or even a packing company, they are going to use these standards to give you an estimate.

Once you are packed, be sure that you are labeling these boxes to ensure that your moving crew will know which room these go into later. Here at Dunmar Moving, we can help with any move, whether it be local or long distance, so call us in plenty of time to schedule your move.
